JAMES PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWSLETTER MARCH 2009 VOL 7 ISSUE 3 Karen Conroy, DRE 412-741-6766 ext. 503 HYPERLINK "mailto:stjamesreled@comcast.net" stjamesreled@comcast.net PROTECTING GODS CHILDREN, the child sexual abuse awareness program, will be presented here at St. James on Sunday, March 15 from 12:30-3:30 PM. All those in any formal ministry in the Church (Eucharistic Minister, Usher, Lector, Choir Member) and those who work with children in the parish must complete all aspects of the Safe Environments Protocol (criminal and child abuse history clearances, Code of Pastoral Conduct, Diocesan Database Application and PGC). Protecting Gods Children also affords parents the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge to keep their children safe. If you are interested in attending please contact Sue Ponticello at 412-741-6650 ext. 315 and leave you name and phone number. THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED MARCH 6-13. CLOSING INFORMATION WILL NOW BE AVAILABLE ON WPXI TV OR ONLINE AT WPXI.COM. We will continue our past practices as well. The message at the Religious Education Office phone number will be changed to indicate a closing and catechists will be alerted and asked to call their families. THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO OUR PENNY POWER CAMPAIGN to aid the Knights of Columbus in their fundraiser for the St. Anthony School Program and McGuire Home. We raised almost $300. These two programs aid those childrens with special needs in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. AND WE ARE NOT DONE YET! You have all been gracious in your giving this year to the Penny Power Campaign, the Birthday Boxes for the Womens Shelter, the Mental Health Association Christmas Party and the Annual Holiday Shoe Drive for the Homeless. Joann Krysinski, one of the 6th grade catechists, was approached by a friend to help in collecting items for a unit of soldiers deployed to Iraq. They are in need of liquid body soap, Q-tips, small trash bags, lip balm, chapstick, sunglasses, Tums, mouthwash, toothpaste, toothbrushes and dental floss. Letters are also appreciated. They were deployed this past month and one of their number has already been killed. He was SSG Mark Baum, 32 years old, from Telford Pa. National Guard. Please keep him, his family and all these soldiers in your prayers. They are giving their all for our country. I am hoping that all of you will be willing to give something in return. Please bring your items to the Religious Education Office by the March 15 Sunday session. JUST A REMINDER, THAT IF YOU ARE SENDING IN SNACKS FOR YOUR CHILDS CLASS, PLEASE MAKE IT A HEALTHY SNACK. Sugary snacks spike their energy level, but can then make it difficult for the children to concentrate. THE ACRE (ASSESSMENT OF CATECHESIS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION) WILL BE GIVEN TO THE 5TH AND 8TH GRADE STUDENTS ON SUNDAY APRIL 19. All 5th and 8th graders in our Summer, Home School and Sunday session should be in attendance to take the test. Summer and Home School 8th grade students should report to the Cafeteria. The 5th grade Home School students should report to the 5th grade classroom on the top floor. See below for more information. Lenten Family Gathering The Three Trees (Presented by the St. James Childrens Choir) and Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? March 22, 2009 12:45-3:00 PM Church and Gathering Space The Assessment of Catechesis Religious Education (ACRE) will be given to our 5th and 8th graders in both our school and CCD programs in April. This is a standardized assessment that allows us to evaluate our programs and assess how well our children are learning their faith. It measures cumulative knowledge, so a child cannot really study for it, but that doesnt mean we cant have fun preparing. At our Lenten Family Gathering we are planning to do just that. We will be playing our version of the popular game show, Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? Needed are adult contestants willing to answer questions taken from our 1-8 grade textbooks in the areas of creed, sacraments, morality prayer and Church history. The contestants will be aided by a class of students in grades 1-8 who will assist in answering the questions. Prizes will be awarded to both the contestants and class members. If you or your child are interested in participating as a contestant or class member, please indicate below. For the feeble of heart we also need an audience. We will begin in the Church with the St. James Childrens Choir production of The Three Trees (Three trees reflect on what they want to become when they are fully grown, and they all end up being a part of the life of Jesus in the end). Donations for our refreshment table are needed. Lets keep it healthy (cheese and crackers, finger sandwiches, veggies and dip, fruit, healthy snack foods and cookies). So that we can adequately plan, please fill out the form below and return by March 15. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Please detach and return by March 15 to the Religious Education Office FAMILY NAME _____________________________________ #ATTENDING ______ Our family will attend the Lenten Family Gathering.
